Why Does Menopause Cause Sleep Problems?

Many women experience sleep disturbances during menopause, struggling with insomnia, night sweats, and frequent awakenings. These disruptions are largely due to hormonal fluctuations, particularly declining estrogen and progesterone levels, which play a key role in sleep regulation.

Lower estrogen can reduce melatonin production, making it harder to fall and stay asleep, while decreased progesterone—known for its calming effects—can contribute to restlessness and light sleep.

Additionally, elevated cortisol levels (the body's stress hormone) may lead to midnight awakenings, anxiety, and difficulty returning to sleep. The combination of hot flushes, night sweats, and increased stress sensitivity can significantly impact sleep quality and overall well-being.

Fortunately, there are natural approaches to improve sleep during menopause.
