Whats the difference between a hot flush and Night Sweats?

Hot flushes and night sweats are common menopause symptoms, both triggered by hormonal changes—but they are not the same.

What Is a Hot Flush?

A hot flush (hot flash) is a sudden, intense heat sensation that spreads across the face, neck, and chest. It can cause:

  • Flushed skin

  • Sweating

  • Increased heart rate

Hot flushes typically happen during the day and last anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes.

What Are Night Sweats?

Night sweats are episodes of excessive sweating during sleep, often severe enough to soak clothing and bedding. They can lead to:

  • Interrupted sleep

  • Fatigue & brain fog

  • Mood swings & anxiety

How Stress Triggers Night Sweats

Research shows that chronic stress and high cortisol levels can worsen night sweats. Stress affects the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that regulates body temperature. When stress levels spike, the body misinterprets normal temperature fluctuations, leading to sweating at night.

A 2022 study published in the Journal of Women's Health found that women experiencing higher stress levels reported more frequent and severe night sweats during perimenopause and menopause.

Naturopathy offers a holistic approach to managing hot flushes and night sweats by balancing hormones, reducing stress, and supporting the body's natural healing with herbal remedies, nutrition, and lifestyle changes.
